Lindsey chats about the BEST trio of items: beauty, books and buys. I love her down to earth take on products and am constantly using her beauty reviews to influence my own purchases. She's full of great advice and I love going to her with all my questions. As a fellow reader I get so much value out of her book reviews. We read a lot of the same books too so it's great to see how our takes line up! And reading her buy posts are a great shopping inspiration! Her opinions are honest, something I don't find with other bloggers.
One of the many mutual loves in our friendship is of lip color!! Lindsey has introduced me to some great brands and I love seeing what color she shows up wearing every time we see each other. With that, I was thrilled when Lindsey offered to write up her top lippies for the summer!
Summer to me is the season of fun lip colors. In the fall I feel like I can only wear darker wine colors and the holidays, to me, mean red! When summer comes around, I feel like I can break out whatever bold lip I want and it’s one of my favorite ways to spice up an outfit. There are definitely a few staples that I have in my collection and that I feel everyone should have.
1. A lip balm with SPF.
My personal every day favorite is the Burt’s Bees Nourishing Lip Balm with Mango ($3.30). Unfortunately, this one does not SPF (woops!). However, there are a lot of really nice lip balms out there that do. While this isn’t a lip color, I find that a good lip balm is important in making sure that your lips are primed and moisturized before you apply your product. Also, if you’re going to be in the sun, it is important to protect your lips as well as the rest of your body. Chapstick brand is inexpensive (about $2.19) and they have a lot of fun flavors and scents that have SPF in them.
2. A hot pink
Oh hot pink, how I love thee on a warm summer’s day! This is probably the number one bold lip color I would recommend for summer. I find that for a bold color it is the easiest one for everyone to pull off. Bright pinks with blue undertones are great because not only do they look great on just about everyone, but they make your teeth look whiter too! My favorite bright pink (and the lip color that started my bold lip obsession) is the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Yu ($26). This is definitely a bright pink, but there’s something about it that is super wearable. I also love the satin lip pencils for multiple reasons. First, I find lip pencils to be easier to apply than true lipsticks. If you are a lip product beginner, you will have no problem with these. Second, these pencils last really well on the lips without drying you out much (they will dry you out a tiny bit, but noting uncomfortable). I have worn this color and proceeded to drink and eat multiple meals and still have color on my lips. It doesn’t fade in an awkward way and it’s great for when you don’t feel like constantly reapplying product.
3. A barbie pink
If you want to wear a bright pink, but don’t feel like you’re bold enough to wear a hot pink, this is a great way to go. I find that this is better when I want color on my lips, but maybe don’t want them to be the center of attention. This is a great summer color since it’s still bright, but slightly more functional for day to day wear. My favorite Barbie pink at the moment is the Maybelline Color Elixir in Hibiscus Haven ($8.99). First of all, if you haven’t tried the Maybelline Color Elixirs, you need to. They’re a combination of a gloss and a liquid lipstick and they are amazing. The consistency isn’t sticky but is still glossy and moisturizing. The pigmentation is hard to beat, and they also stain your lips so when the glossy-ness wears off, you still have color. What I particularly love about Hibiscus is that you can build it up. When you first put it on, it’s more of a sheer bright color which is a great option. However, if you want something a bit more bold, you can definitely add to it.
4. A bright red
Who said that red is only for the holiday season? While I do reach for reds more often in the winter, there is never a bad time to wear a red lip. In the summer, a red lip can help take a more casual outfit from day to night, or beach to dinner. I prefer brighter reds in the summer, since a dark red can feel like a bit much. My favorite bright red is the Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer in Big Bang ($5.89). Again, if you haven’t tried any of these lip lacquers, you need to. They are a super pigmented liquid lip stick that is smooth and easy to apply. They are definitely less gloss-like than the Color Elixirs, but they still have a glossy finish. I love that this red in particular has (again) blue undertones and leans a little bit cool. It has that magic ability to look great on just about anyone and is a little brighter than most reds that I’ve seen. If you are new to reds, I think this is a great place to start because the application is pretty great. It’s easy to apply and there is no feathering, so you don’t have to worry about using a lip liner.
5. A coral
I think corals are absolutely beautiful. I also feel like this is a great summer staple color to have as more of a neutral. Yes, I love wearing bright colors in the summer, but sometimes you need something a bit more subtle. Corals are a wonderful way to do a more natural lip in the summer, but still have color. My favorite shade is the NARS Satin Lipstick in Niagara ($27). This particular coral leans a bit more pink than orange, which works better with my skin tone. I think that in general, this shade is a little easier to wear as oranges can be tough to pull off. Corals are a great color that can transition you from spring to summer and they look great with anything. It’s also the perfect solution if you’re looking for a fun summer color that’s appropriate for the work setting.
There are so many fun lip colors and products to play with in the summer, and these are just my top few. I hope that I introduced you to something new that maybe you wouldn’t have thought about before. Do you have a go to summer lip product? What color have you been wanting to try?
